What is MGO in Mānuka honey?

MGO stands for methylglyoxal, the primary antibacterial compound unique to Mānuka honey produced from New Zealand's Leptospermum scoparium (Mānuka bush). MGO is measured in milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). The higher the number, the stronger the antibacterial activity. Unlike hydrogen peroxide activity in standard honeys, MGO is not neutralised by proteins, enzymes, or body fluids. Tōtika Health produces Mānuka honey from MGO 25+ through to MGO 1050+, all IANZ-accredited lab tested and MPI certified.

 

What is the difference between MGO and UMF ratings?

Both MGO and UMF describe the strength of Mānuka honey. MGO states the methylglyoxal concentration directly in mg/kg. UMF is a separate grading system that incorporates additional quality markers. Tōtika products carry both figures on the label: MGO 50+ (UMF 3.5+), MGO 100+ (UMF 6+), MGO 250+ (UMF 10+), MGO 650+ (UMF 16+), MGO 850+ (UMF 20+), and MGO 1050+ (UMF 23+), the highest commercial grade available.

 

Which MGO grade should I buy?

MGO 25-100+: everyday use, general wellness. MGO 250+: moderate potency, daily immune support. MGO 650+: high potency, regular therapeutic use. Yes. Tōtika Health owns and operates its own Mānuka beehives in the Bay of Islands, Northland, New Zealand. Honey is sourced directly from Tōtika's own hives, not purchased from third-party brokers. Every batch is independently verified by IANZ-accredited laboratory testing and MPI certified under New Zealand's Mānuka Honey Science Definition. Fully traceable from hive to jar.

 

What makes Tōtika skincare different from other Mānuka honey skincare brands?

Tōtika Health owns its entire supply chain: honey and propolis come from Tōtika's own Bay of Islands hives.
