Genuine Mānuka honey is verified by independent laboratory testing, not by the label. In New Zealand, MPI requires every batch to pass a 5-attribute test (four chemical markers plus one DNA marker), so ask any seller for their batch certificate. If they cannot produce one, walk away.

How to tell real Mānuka honey from fake
More Mānuka honey is sold around the world each year than New Zealand possibly produces. The maths does not work. A lot of what sits on shelves labelled "Mānuka" is blended, diluted, or simply not Mānuka at all, and the label is often the last place the truth shows up.
We are a Mānuka producer in New Zealand. We test every batch of our honey, whether it's manuka or other honey, MPI registered and EU, China, USA compliant, so here is the plain version of what actually separates real from fake, and the questions that cut through it in about thirty seconds.
Start with the number, not the words
"Premium", "raw", "pure", "active", "genuine". None of these words mean anything on a Mānuka jar. There is no standard behind them and anyone can print them. The only things on a label that carry a testable meaning are the grading numbers: MGO.
MGO is methylglyoxal, measured in milligrams per kilogram. It is the compound responsible for Mānuka's non-peroxide activity, and it is stable, so the number on the jar is a real measurement of something in the honey.

If a jar shows a big word like "active" but no MGO or UMF number, that is your first red flag. Real graded Mānuka states its number, because the number is the point.
The test that actually defines Mānuka: the MPI five-attribute test
Here is the part most buyers have never heard of, and it is the one that matters most.
Since 2018, the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has a legal definition of what can be exported as monofloral Mānuka honey. To pass, a honey must clear a five-attribute test: four chemical markers plus one DNA marker unique to Mānuka pollen. It is not a marketing scheme. It is the government standard, and honey that cannot pass it cannot legally leave New Zealand as monofloral Mānuka.
So the single most useful question you can ask a seller is this: Does this honey pass the MPI five-attribute test, and can I see the result? A real New Zealand producer will say yes without hesitating. A reseller of blended or fake honey usually cannot, because the honey never passed it.
Ask for the lab certificate. A real one has three things.
Grading numbers mean nothing without an independent lab behind them. When you ask a genuine producer for proof, you should get a certificate that shows:
The testing laboratory is IANZ-accredited. IANZ is New Zealand's accreditation body. An MGO number from an unaccredited lab, or a no-named lab at all, is just a number someone typed.
The actual measured MGO value matches or exceeds the grade on the jar. Not a range, not a "typical" figure, the tested result for that batch.
The batch or lot reference, so the certificate ties to the jar in your hand rather than to some other honey entirely.
If a seller cannot produce a certificate with those three things, you do not have proof. You have a label.

Is there an MGO or UMF number, or just marketing words?
No number, walk away.
Does it pass the MPI five-attribute test, and will they show you?
This is the definition of Mānuka, not an optional extra.
Is there an IANZ-accredited lab certificate with a batch number? Ask to see it.
Where was it made and by whom, and can you verify it?
A named New Zealand producer with a real address beats a faceless brand. The label should show more than a brand name: the packing premises and the RMP (Risk Management Programme) ID. That ID is the real tell, because you can check it yourself. New Zealand publishes every registered packer on the MPI register of risk management programmes, so a genuine producer's RMP ID will resolve to their name. We also hold the export registrations for our markets: FDA for the United States, TRACES for Europe, and equivalent registration for China and Saudi Arabia. If a jar shows no RMP ID, walk away.
Does the price make sense? Genuine high-MGO Mānuka is scarce and priced accordingly. A jar of "MGO 1000" for the price of supermarket honey is telling you something, and it is not good news.
